PARENTSURF / PRIVACY

Privacy Policy

ParentSurf is owned and operated by Scholar Within, Inc.

Last updated

This ParentSurf-specific notice extends the Scholar Within Privacy Policy to parentsurf.com. Read both together. The provisions below apply specifically to ParentSurf and control if they conflict with a general provision about another Scholar Within service. They do not change the policies for those other services.

What this policy covers

ParentSurf helps adults discover education providers, charter schools, and education funding programs. This notice covers its directory, maps, accounts, reviews, favorites, provider-management tools, and any paid ParentSurf listing features you choose.

Browsing or creating a ParentSurf account does not enroll you in Scholar Within courses, Fluent Within reading assessments, a scholarship, or a text-message program. Those services have their own notices and any required consent steps.

Information ParentSurf handles

  • Accounts and support: your name, email, sign-in identifiers, authentication records, account preferences, and information you send when requesting help.
  • Directory participation: reviews and ratings you submit, saved favorites, requests for listing access or corrections, and provider information, product/service entries, catalog feeds, or CSV data you supply.
  • Published directory information: provider and school names, professional contact information, locations, websites, public social links, descriptions, and recorded program associations collected from public directories, official program sources, websites, or authorized submissions. This can include contact details of individual professionals.
  • Billing, when offered: company and billing contact details, Stripe customer and subscription references, plan status, renewal dates, and transaction records. Card details are entered in Stripe-hosted checkout; ParentSurf does not receive or store full card numbers.
  • Technical and browsing information: requested pages, search/filter values, IP addresses and approximate region information handled by hosting infrastructure, browser/device details, usage measurements, and security logs. Do not put sensitive personal information in searches or URL parameters.

Google, Facebook, and Scholar Within sign-in

Where a sign-in option is offered and you choose it, ParentSurf receives basic identity information from that service, such as an account identifier, name, email address, email-verification status, and any profile image supplied in the basic profile. Supabase handles ParentSurf authentication and supported account linking.

The Scholar Within connection shares the adult account ID, name, and verified email. It does not import student rosters, reading recordings, assessment results, course purchases, or Scholar Within subscriptions into ParentSurf. Email ownership may need to be verified before accounts can be connected.

These sign-in methods are for account access, not permission to read your email, files, calendar, friends list, or social posts, or to post on your behalf. Your Google, Facebook, or Scholar Within password is not given to ParentSurf. Signing out of ParentSurf does not necessarily sign you out of the other service.

To request deletion of ParentSurf data associated with a social login, follow the account and data deletion instructions below. Removing an app connection in a sign-in provider's settings does not by itself erase information already held by ParentSurf.

Why we use information

We use information to operate and secure accounts, show and improve directory results, remember your choices, maintain source-backed listings, moderate reviews, verify provider-management access, respond to requests, and administer any ParentSurf subscription you purchase.

We also use information to prevent misuse, investigate disputes, maintain necessary business records, and meet legal obligations. Creating an account or accepting terms is not, by itself, an opt-in to promotional email, advertising tracking, or SMS. Any separate marketing choices are handled at the point they are offered.

What other people can see

Published provider/school profiles, contact details supplied for publication, product/service listings, and approved reviews are public. A published review displays the reviewer's public profile name, rating, and review content. Public content can be indexed by search engines or copied by visitors.

Saved favorites, sign-in email addresses, authentication records, and billing details are not presented as public directory information. If you separately supply an email or phone number as a provider's public contact, that listing contact is public.

Do not submit a child's full name, health records, diagnoses, student records, private addresses, passwords, or other sensitive information in reviews, support attachments, or catalog uploads. A listing about a school is not a student record, and ParentSurf does not require information about your child to browse.

Maps, location, and browser storage

ParentSurf can suggest a U.S. state using approximate region headers supplied by its hosting platform. The state lookup returns a state code, not a precise position, and does not request your browser's GPS location. Hosting infrastructure can still process your IP address for ordinary requests and security.

You can change the state filter or choose all states. A manually selected preference is reused for up to 180 days; an inferred state for about one day. The preference is held in your browser's local storage, not added to your public profile. You can remove it through your browser's site-data settings.

A ZIP code you enter is used to filter or center nearby directory results. MapLibre renders maps with OpenFreeMap tiles; requests for those tiles expose normal request information, including your IP address and the area being viewed, to the map service. Provider-hosted images can similarly generate requests to their hosts.

Authentication uses cookies and related browser storage to maintain your session and protect sign-in. Blocking or clearing that storage may sign you out or reset preferences. ParentSurf uses Vercel for hosting and web-usage analytics. Its current implementation does not add Meta Pixel or other advertising-retargeting scripts simply because social sign-in is available.

Service providers and external websites

Services supporting ParentSurf include Supabase for authentication, database and file storage; Vercel for hosting and usage analytics; Stripe for payments when enabled; email/support services for requested communications; and OpenFreeMap for map tiles. They handle the information needed for the functions they provide. A chosen sign-in service also processes information under its own policy.

Disclosure for security, legal obligations, business transfers, and other company-wide circumstances is described in the Scholar Within Privacy Policy. Public directory content is shared as described above. ParentSurf account data is not offered for sale or rental.

Provider, school, program, social-media, and product links lead to services that may be operated by others. Their collection, checkout, and communications are governed by their policies. A directory listing does not mean Scholar Within owns that organization.

Retention and security

We keep ParentSurf account and business records for the purposes described here, including providing the requested service, resolving disputes, preventing abuse, and meeting applicable recordkeeping obligations. Public directory entries can remain independently of a reviewer's or provider manager's account because they may come from public sources.

Deletion can be subject to legal or security exceptions, necessary billing records, and backup retention. We cannot promise removal of copies independently held by search engines or third-party websites. We use safeguards appropriate to the service, but no system can guarantee complete security. Reading-assessment and recording-retention provisions for other Scholar Within services do not describe ParentSurf data.

Access, corrections, and data deletion

Email hello@scholarwithin.com with the subject “ParentSurf privacy request” to request access, correction, export, or deletion of your ParentSurf personal information or account. Use the account email when possible and tell us which request you are making. Do not send your password, card details, or identity documents in the initial message.

For a Google, Facebook, or Scholar Within login, identify the sign-in method and account email. We may ask for reasonable information to verify ownership before acting. We respond according to the laws that apply to the request; this is a support-assisted process, not an instant self-service delete button.

For public listing corrections or removal requests, include the ParentSurf profile URL and explain which information needs attention. Account deletion, removal of a publicly sourced organization listing, cancellation of a paid subscription, and deletion of an account on another Scholar Within service are separate requests. Tell us if you need more than one; you can manage a ParentSurf subscription through its billing portal where available.

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may also have rights to object to or limit processing, withdraw consent, use an authorized agent, or appeal a privacy decision. Contact the same address to exercise those rights or raise a concern. We will not penalize you for exercising rights protected by law.

Children and student information

ParentSurf accounts are for adults age 18 or older. It is not a child account, classroom roster, or reading-recording service. It does not provide the parent-consent or school-authorization workflows used by Fluent Within.

If you believe a child has created an account or that private child/student information has been submitted to ParentSurf, contact hello@scholarwithin.com so we can investigate and address it, including deletion when appropriate or required. Do not include additional sensitive child information in a public review.

Updates and contact

We will date revisions to this notice and provide any additional notice or choices required by applicable law. Changes to a policy do not replace a separate consent that is required for a new use of information. Also see ParentSurf's Terms of Use.
